ALBUM REVIEW: AN ABSTRACT ILLUSION
´THE SLEEPING CITY´

the sleeping city

ENGLISH VERSION:
In a futuristic way, the keys introduce the new work of the Swedes An Abstract Illusion via Willowtip Records, which with 7 songs introduces us to the sonic depth of a progressive metal that not only focuses on the perfection of its sounds, but this time adds a particular darkness to each of the songs that compose it.

Blackmurmur, 11-minute track is a premonition of a path of no return to this chiaroscuro blend that mesmerizes from the start, where the fusion of black metal with progressive resonances is evident all at once without wasting time on explanations. While the drums rumble endlessly and the deep, agonized screams of the voice keep you hooked, the atmospheric synthesized background composition provides a contrast that is simply remarkable.

With a more classic sound and melodically chorused voices, it comes into action. No Dreams Beyond Empty Horizons which includes a prayer like an inert supplication on the path of desolation. Here, the melodious voice shines through, breaking through the chaos to deliver sudden moments of peace while the intricate guitars do their thing. And just as chaos enters amidst the accelerated riffs and thundering drums, entropy unravels towards the end of a song that simply seems to be part of a movie.Like A Geyser Ever Erupting enters the game with noticeable shades of darkness. Here, everything becomes heavier and reaches the core of a somber metal that shudders in the shadows, decanting into rhythmic passages like a back-and-forth of confusing emotions in the human psyche.

And just when everything seems resolved, it surprises you again with a truly mind-blowing musical breakthrough. The interplay of voices and the double pedalboard is mind-blowing and addictive; the evocation of pain and internal struggle is felt latent as the composition shifts and undergoes rhythmic inflections between what I would define as light and darkness.Frost Flower brings back the sound of ’80s video games with an intro featuring synthesizers, slightly evoking the feeling of watching the television series Stranger Things, but only in its first few seconds. Perhaps this could be considered the album’s «ballad» due to its calm meter and harmonious voice, serving as a break in the middle of this new work, without losing any of its power. Until it explodes into fury, of course.

Emmett emerges guiltlessly from the underworld, and like a seductive dance, it draws you into its somber, painful, and persuasive melody. A conceptualization that pleasantly surprises if we consider the very levels of consciousness within our human psyche. A sonic genius that simply makes your hair stand on end. Eleven minutes and 20 seconds in which every nerve fiber runs through your spine, making you tremble, ache, bleed, and wish it would never end.

Returning to the soundtrack of films and video games from the golden age we find Silverfields, calm on the shore of a dark ocean, an atmospheric transitional passage with soft arrangements that detail an energetic drum beat that shines on its own. All of this to give way to the outcome of a work that so far delivers on everything and more. The end of the story comes with another 10-minute story that seems to be just seconds thanks to its melodic-histrionic slip withThe Sleeping City. The guitar riffs unleash their accelerated violence while the keys in the background sigh melancholy and the voice rumbles with suffering. Everything seems to crumble, collapse, and shake within consciousness, and as the seconds pass, you can feel each of the notes that end in a captivating and comforting piano.

A work that goes beyond being a simple script, ready for those who just want to hear something in passing, because the subtext is complex, profound, and a true masterpiece.
